Grocers H-E-B and Walmart are building their own microgrids in Texas to provide the stores with consistent power during outages.
The supermarkets are partnering with Houston-based company Enchanted Rock to complete the installations.
According to Supermarket News, Enchanted Rock’s generators are also being installed at hospitals and assisted-living facilities, but large retailers, including grocery stores, are their biggest customers.
To date, H-E-B has utilized solar panels on 60 of its stores to bolster energy resilience. H-E-B and Walmart have both been able to sell back the power generated to Texas utilities, as well.
