Case Study Summary: Solar Power Transformation for MGM Resorts International
Developer: UVcell Solar
Project Overview
MGM Resorts International, with the assistance of UVcell Solar, completed a landmark renewable energy project: a 100 MW solar array spanning 640 acres within Nevada’s Dry Lake Solar Energy Zone. Dubbed the “MGM Resorts Mega Solar Array,” this installation includes 323,000 solar panels and supplies up to 300,000 MWh annually—enough to power over 25,000 homes each year.
Impact on MGM’s Operations
The solar array provides 90% of MGM’s daytime electricity needs across its 13 Las Vegas casinos, which house a total of 36,000 hotel rooms. By 2022, the array contributed to a substantial 41% reduction in emissions compared to 2019 levels, a reduction equivalent to preventing the burning of 250 million pounds of coal.
Commitment to Sustainability
MGM’s commitment to renewable energy led it to exit its relationship with Nevada Energy at a significant cost of $86.9 million. Through this project, MGM is on track to reach its target of a 45% reduction in emissions per square foot across its 65 million square feet of properties by 2025. The solar installation has become a cornerstone of MGM’s sustainability strategy, providing 40% of its total energy needs and aiming to cover 100% of its daytime electricity demands across Las Vegas properties.
