Energy infrastructure developer Jupiter Power has begun operating a “first of its scale” battery storage project in Houston, Texas.
The 200MW/400MWh Callisto I Energy Center lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage system (BESS) dispatches stored energy into the ERCOT market.
According to Energy Storage News, the BESS is located on the site of a now-closed fossil fuel plant owned by Houston Lighting & Power (HL&P) — an important strategic location to help manage power supply and demand imbalances in the metropolitan region that allows for another 400MW/800MWh of battery storage in the future.
“Callisto I is the first energy storage project at this scale in the City of Houston and will help meet Houston’s growing power needs while also increasing resiliency from extreme weather events,” Jupiter Power’s CEO Andy Bowman said.
