GM Turns to AI for Siting New EV Charger Buildouts

General Motors (GM) is utilizing AI and machine learning to assist in finding “ideal” locations for building out EV charging infrastructure across the U.S.

Despite GM’s EV sales hitting an all-time high in 2024, uncertainty surrounding how to find charging stations remains a concern for many customers when deciding whether or not to go all-electric. To that end, GM has collaborated with EVgo and Pilot Travel Centers to not only add more public charging options, but to improve the overall customer experience, as well.

GM’s partnership with EVgo will produce 2,850 new DC public charging stalls, including 400 fast charging stalls at flagship destinations in major U.S. metropolitan areas. Each location will feature high-power 350kW fast chargers and pull-through layouts for easy maneuvering.

Its partnership with Pilot Travel Centers will add as many as 2,000 DC fast chargers at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers nationwide.

According to a recent blog post by GM, the automotive company’s data scientists are using AI tools to pinpoint strategic locations for EV charging stations, including predictive analytics and geospatial algorithms to evaluate EV traffic patterns. An algorithm evaluates key criteria including traffic flow and proximity to other chargers and develops maps to illustrate the model’s decision-making process.

Once complete, the model’s recommendations are combined with expert insights to finalize ideal charging station placement. GM then consults with Pilot Flying J and EVgo to make these precisely pinpointed charging opportunities a reality.
