Itron Unveils Grid Edge Essentials Solution to Address Utility Issues in Real Time

Itron, Inc., a technology company offering products and services for energy and water resource management, has unveiled its Grid Edge Essentials solution, which addresses the foundational issues utilities face at the grid edge in real time.

Grid Essentials simplifies and streamlines the adoption of new technologies and accelerates time to value by providing distribution grid visibility to the grid edge, as well as enhancing customer engagement.

Utilities face a number of challenges, including aging infrastructure, extreme weather events, load growth demand, and increased complexity from DERs. Grid Edge Essentials offers advanced grid operations and customer service teams with a distributed intelligence (DI) solution that provides high-resolution data from the edge of a utility’s distribution network at every endpoint.

According to Itron, the solution can enhance grid capacity by as much as 20% through the optimization of existing grid assets.

Key components of the technology include real-time, autonomous renewables integration, highly accurate and measured location awareness, reduced operating costs, and data access via DataHub, which provides secure API access to curated data products and lifecycle data management.

Grid Essentials’ initial configuration for IOUs will be available in North America in December 2024; configurations for international markets, cooperative and large municipal utilities will be available later in 2025.
