The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced the next round of recipients that will be awarded federal funding for building EV charging stations along the state’s interstates and highways.
The awardings were presented by the Commonwealth Transportation Board to VDOT during its October 22 meeting.
Approximately $22 million will go towards the construction and installation of EV chargers at 35 separate locations.
Funding comes from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program. It is a part of the bipartisan Infrastructure and Jobs Act and has already awarded Virginia with $106 million for EV chargers which have been built over a five-year period.
The upcoming fast-charging stations will have at least four ports and be built within federally designated “alternative fuel corridors” along interstates and highways. Each charger will be located within a 50-mile distance of another.
According to Virgina Mercury, among the recipients, there are six stations along Interstate 64, one on Interstate 66, two along Interstate 77, two along Interstate 81, one on Interstate 85 and three along Interstate 95. On the state highway front, six are proposed for Route 17, two for Route 23, six for Route 29 and five for Route 460.
